Iron Roughneck Dies — Engineered for the Full-Duty Loads of DRILLMEC PCT-130 Machines

Pan Industries power tong dies are OEM-equivalent inserts for DRILLMEC PCT-series hydraulic power tongs, including the PCT-130 class rated to 150,000 Nm make-up and 180,000 Nm break-out torque. Machined from high-grade alloy steel, short-blasted, and case-hardened to a controlled depth, the dies pair a wear-resistant hardened gripping face with a ductile, un-hardened core that absorbs shock and torque impact. Built to OEM fit and profile, they’re a reliable, India-manufactured alternative for tong operators needing dependable tool-joint grip cycle after cycle.

Description

The performance of an iron roughneck is ultimately determined by the dies that grip the tool joint. A machine rated to 180,000 Nm break-out torque cannot deliver on that rating if the dies wear smooth after a limited number of connections, or fracture the first time a joint fails to break cleanly.

Pan Industries is currently the only manufacturer in India producing iron roughneck dies to OEM-equivalent standard for DRILLMEC PCT-series machines, including the PCT-130.

Our dies are engineered, not simply hardened. A die that is hardened uniformly throughout provides strong initial grip but lacks the ductility to withstand shock loading — such as the sudden release of a stuck or unevenly broken-out connection — and is prone to cracking under such loads. Conversely, a die left too soft will deform and lose gripping capability within a limited number of cycles. To address this, each die is manufactured with a two-zone structure: a case-hardened outer surface, hardened to a controlled and specified depth, that provides wear resistance and sustains tooth geometry over repeated make-up and break-out cycles; and a deliberately ductile core beneath it, designed to absorb torque spikes and shock loading rather than transmit them directly into the hardened layer.

Prior to hardening, each die is machined from high-grade alloy steel and short-blasted to achieve a clean, uniform surface. Inconsistent surface preparation results in inconsistent case depth, which in turn leads to uneven wear across the die’s gripping teeth — a defect that is often the earliest indicator of inferior manufacturing.

Each die is produced to OEM profile and engagement geometry, allowing direct installation into existing PCT-series die pockets without modification or fitting adjustment. For rig operators and rental fleets operating DRILLMEC iron roughnecks in India, this provides access to a domestically manufactured, quality-inspected consumable, eliminating the lead time, freight cost, and customs delays associated with imported OEM parts, and reducing equipment downtime associated with die replacement.

Compatible with DRILLMEC PCT-130 and related PCT-series iron roughnecks — tubular OD range 89–280 mm, make-up torque to 150,000 Nm, break-out torque to 180,000 Nm.
